First date in Rome: what to avoid, what to try
A first date in Rome has two classic traps: overly touristy spots (Trastevere on weekends, Campo de' Fiori, Piazza di Spagna - noise, inflated prices, rushed waiters) and overly informal spots (fast food, burger joints, chains). In the first case you don't feel at ease, in the second you don't make an impression. The middle ground is made of neighborhood trattorias with curated atmosphere, wine bars with kitchen, contemporary restaurants with intimate dining rooms.
The second rule is have a plan B: after dinner, an optional activity that gives you the chance to continue if it went well, or to say goodbye naturally if it was so-so. A theater show is too demanding for a first date, a cinema kills the conversation, a club is too much. Better: an evening exhibition, a cocktail bar with quiet music, a walk to the Janiculum or Orange Garden.
Recommended neighborhoods
Monti
The triangle between via Panisperna, via dei Serpenti and via Leonina is full of small wine bars, modern trattorias, cocktail bars with few seats. After dinner, piazza Madonna dei Monti is the meeting point. No cars, no mass tourism.
Testaccio
Serious Roman cuisine (Flavio al Velavevodetto, Felice, Checchino), neighborhood atmosphere, many trendy venues in the former slaughterhouse area. Good also for an after at Città dell'Altra Economia.
Prati
Cleaner and less touristy than the historic center, with good-level contemporary restaurants and modern cocktail bars (The Court, Il Marchese dei Prati). Great for those coming from the north of the city.
Pigneto
For those who prefer an alternative and less formal atmosphere: bistros (Le Levain, Necci), creative cocktail bars (Co.So., Tram Depot), vinyl in the background. Note: very crowded on weekends.

What to do after dinner
Hidden cocktail bars: Jerry Thomas (via Giovanni Vasanzio, password entry from the site), Drink Kong (piazza di San Martino ai Monti), The Barber Shop (via Panisperna), Argot Apothecary (via dei Serpenti). All real speakeasies, with curated drink lists and quiet atmosphere.
Views without queues: the Hotel Minerva terrace, the Orange Garden (free, always open), the Pincio, the lungotevere dei Fiorentini. Less classic than Castel Sant'Angelo or the Janiculum but more intimate and less crowded.
