Florence's historic theaters: drama, opera, dance
Florence has an old and widespread theater tradition, with venues that often occupy historic buildings in the center. Teatro Verdi, on via Ghibellina just steps from Santa Croce, is one of the city's biggest: a mixed program of drama, musicals and big concerts in a sizeable hall. Teatro Puccini, among the city's most active venues, hosts contemporary drama, comedy and music in a dense year-round program, plus the Ridotto for smaller, more experimental performances.
For opera and ballet the reference is the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a modern complex near the Fortezza da Basso and home to one of Italy's most important opera and symphonic seasons. Teatro Goldoni, among the city's oldest, offers a more intimate program of drama and chamber music, while Teatro Niccolini, one of the most striking historic theaters in the center, mixes drama, dance and screenings in a nineteenth-century setting.

Getting around the venues
Most Florence theaters are within walking distance of the historic center, or a short bus ride away: Florence is a compact city, which makes it easy to pair a show with dinner beforehand or a drink after. Teatro Verdi, near Santa Croce, is surrounded by trattorias and osterias with traditional food; Teatro Puccini, a bit further from the historic core, sits in a more residential area with neighborhood taverns.
On the ticketing side, Florence theaters rely heavily on seasons and subscriptions, with shows staying in the program for several nights: if one date is sold out, you'll often find another the same week. For the Maggio Musicale, premieres and the most anticipated titles sell out further in advance. On this page you'll find upcoming shows with theater, date and time, and the link takes you to the official ticketing of the theater or the circuit managing it.
