Comedian on stage with a microphone during a stand-up night in Rome

Open mics, line-up nights, solo shows: how to read Rome's comedy scene

Stand-up comedy in Rome is not one single type of night, and it pays to tell them apart before you go. The open mic is the basic format: many comedians, five or ten minutes each, new material being tested, low price or entry by donation. It is unpredictable by design, and that is exactly why it is where the bits that later end up in full shows are born. A line-up night, by contrast, puts together three or four experienced comedians with a host, runs well over an hour and delivers a higher, steadier average level.

The third format is the solo show: one comedian, one written hour, often touring several cities and hosted in an actual theatre. Here tickets are sold through official channels and do run out, while in clubs you usually pay at the door. A note on wording: in Rome the words comedy, cabaret and stand-up are used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. If you specifically want stand-up, read the event description and the comedian's name before you read the venue's name.

Small room with a seated audience during a comedy show

Where stand-up happens in Rome, and how the door works

Roman comedy lives mostly in small venues and clubs rather than big theatres: rooms of one or two hundred seats, a low stage, often with a drink included. The Please Stand Up circuit is the most recognisable reference for regular stand-up programming in the city, with nights spread across several venues. Alongside it, many clubs and cultural spaces host comedy one or two nights a week without a fixed home: that is why the same comedian can play three different rooms within a month.

Three practical things to know. First: many venues require a membership card, so arrive a few minutes early and bring an ID. Second: seating is often unnumbered, so whoever arrives early sits at the front, and sitting at the front at a stand-up night means the comedian may talk to you. Third: prices are low compared with theatre, but real availability is only visible on the promoter's own channel.
