Crowd in front of a concert stage in Milan

Arenas, clubs, concert halls: three separate scenes

Live music in Milan runs on three circuits that barely talk to each other. First, the big-capacity one: Unipol Forum in Assago for indoor international tours, San Siro and the SNAI La Maura racecourse for stadium shows and big summer events. These are nights for thousands of people, with tickets on sale months ahead and often sold out on the day they drop. If that is what you are after, there is only one rule: do not wait.

Below that sit the clubs, and this is where Milan is at its best: Alcatraz and Fabrique for one-to-two-thousand-capacity names, Magazzini Generali and Legend Club for rock and metal, Santeria Toscana 31, Biko and Arci Bellezza for indie, electronic and experimental live sets. Tickets here are often still available midweek and prices stay reasonable. The third circuit is classical and chamber music, where the calendar follows concert seasons rather than trends.

Where they play: neighbourhood by neighbourhood

Milan's live map is easy to read. The south-east, between Porta Romana and Lambrate, holds most of the clubs: Santeria Toscana 31 on viale Toscana, Magazzini Generali on via Pietrasanta, Arci circles such as Arci Bellezza behind Porta Romana. To the north-west, Alcatraz and Fabrique remain the two reference points for mid-size gigs, both housed in converted industrial spaces. Assago and its Forum sit outside the city but are served by the M2 metro line: allow plenty of time for the crowd leaving at the end.

Classical music is concentrated in the centre: the Sala Verdi at the Conservatory on via Conservatorio, Teatro Dal Verme a short walk from Cairoli, the Auditorium in Largo Mahler home to the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, and of course Teatro alla Scala for the symphonic season and recitals. In summer the scene moves outdoors, between the SNAI racecourse and the festivals in the city parks. On this page you will find upcoming concerts with venue, start time and, where available, the minimum price, and every link goes straight to the official box office.
