Drama, opera, musicals: know what you are walking into
Milan has one of the broadest theatre offerings in Europe, but the programmes are not interchangeable. Piccolo Teatro, Italy's first public repertory theatre, works on classic repertory and contemporary research across three very different rooms: Teatro Strehler on largo Greppi for large productions, Teatro Grassi on via Rovello for a more intimate house, Teatro Studio Melato for experimental work. Teatro alla Scala is a different world: opera and ballet, a season that opens on 7 December, and tickets that go long before the date.
Everything else sits in between. Teatro Franco Parenti on via Pier Lombardo and Elfo Puccini on corso Buenos Aires are the reference points for contemporary drama, each running several rooms in parallel across long seasons. Teatro Manzoni and Teatro Carcano keep a more traditional programme, with familiar names and reworked classics. Teatro Nazionale on via Rovani is the home of big musicals, with productions that stay on for weeks.

Getting around the venues
Almost every major venue is on the metro, which makes it easy to combine theatre with dinner. Parenti sits in Porta Romana, an area full of trattorias and bistros that still serve after the curtain. Elfo Puccini is on corso Buenos Aires in Porta Venezia, with late-opening cocktail bars a few minutes away on foot. Piccolo Grassi and Teatro Dal Verme are right in the centre, between Cairoli and Brera.
On tickets, Milan theatres rely heavily on subscriptions and long runs: a show stays on the bill for days or weeks, so if one date is gone you will usually find another. La Scala works differently, and opening nights disappear within hours. On this page you will find scheduled performances with theatre, date and start time, and each link goes to the official box office run by the theatre or its ticketing partner.
