Rome is full of events, but the most authentic local festivals happen outside the city, in the towns of the countryside: Marino, the Castelli Romani, the Lazio province. Here you'll find the village fairs coming up in the next few weeks, within about an hour of the city, with date, location and a link to the official page.
01What local festivals are, in the countryside
A "sagra" is a village fair tied to a typical product or local tradition: the grape harvest, chestnuts, truffles, a regional dish. Unlike a city festival, it's almost always held in the town square, runs for several days and is free or nearly so (you only pay for what you eat or drink).
The best-known festivals near Rome are in the Castelli Romani: Marino with its Grape Festival is the most famous, but almost every town in the province has its own autumn celebration, usually tied to wine or the harvest.
02A weekend in the Castelli Romani
The festivals listed below are within about 60 km of Rome: a radius that covers the Castelli Romani (Marino, Frascati, Genzano, Velletri) well and the closest towns in the province, excluding destinations too far for a day trip or an evening out.
The real distance from Rome varies a lot from town to town: always check the address before you leave, especially if you plan to come back the same evening.
